India's Cybercrime Suspect Registry Prevents Billions in Fraud

India's online "suspect registry," launched in September 2024, has already helped prevent a large amount of financial fraud. By January 2025, it had stopped over six lakh (600,000) fraudulent transactions, saving about Rs 1,800 crore (approximately $216 million USD).

Here's a simplified explanation:

What is the suspect registry? A central database containing information on 1.4 million cybercriminals. It helps banks and law enforcement identify potential threats.

Who created it? The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C).

How does it work? It uses information from the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) to identify potential cybercriminals.

What has it achieved?

  • Prevented about 6.10 lakh fraudulent transactions.

  • Saved about Rs 1,800 crore.

What is the Cyber Fraud Mitigation Centre (CFMC)? A group that brings together banks, telecom companies, and law enforcement to work together to fight cybercrime.

What other measures have been taken?

  • About 8.67 lakh "mule accounts" (accounts used to move stolen money) have been frozen.

  • About 7 lakh SIM cards and 1.4 lakh mobile devices have been blocked.

How can citizens report cyber fraud?

  • By calling the National Helpline number 1930.

  • By using the NCRP website.

  • This system connects citizens, banks, and law enforcement.

What is the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP)? A website where people can report different types of cybercrime, including serious crimes like child pornography. It also has tools to help users and dashboards to monitor progress.

Key Terms/Acronyms:

  • I4C: Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre.

  • CFMC: Cyber Fraud Mitigation Centre.

  • NCRP: National Cybercrime Reporting Portal.

  • MHA: Ministry of Home Affairs.

  • UPI: Unified Payments Interface (a system for making instant mobile payments).

Key Facts:

  • The suspect registry has information on 1.4 million cybercriminals.

  • The NCRP was launched in August 2019.

What are the future plans? To continue improving the systems and cooperation between different groups to better fight cybercrime.

In simple terms: India has created a database of cybercriminals that is helping to prevent a lot of online fraud.

This database, along with other measures like blocking fake accounts and SIM cards, is helping to save a lot of money and protect people from cybercrime. People can easily report cybercrimes through a special website and helpline. The government is continuing to work on improving these systems to make them even more effective
