Ayurvedic Treatment for Alzheimer's disease

New research is offering hope for better treatments for Alzheimer's disease. Scientists at the Bose Institute, led by Professor Anirban Bhunia, have been exploring new ways to fight this brain disease, focusing on harmful proteins called amyloid proteins.

Here's a simplified explanation:

What is Alzheimer's disease? A brain disease that causes memory loss and decline in thinking skills.

What are amyloid proteins? Proteins that clump together in the brain to form plaques. These plaques damage brain cells and lead to the symptoms of Alzheimer's.

What are the new treatment strategies being explored? Professor Bhunia's team used two main approaches:

  1. Synthetic peptides: They created special molecules (peptides) in the lab to stop amyloid proteins from clumping together.
  2. Ayurvedic remedy: They studied an Ayurvedic medicine called Lasunadya Ghrita (LG) to see if it could also prevent amyloid proteins from clumping.

What is Lasunadya Ghrita (LG)? A traditional Ayurvedic medicine used to treat mental illnesses.

What did the research find?

  • The lab-made peptides were effective at stopping amyloid proteins from clumping and were not toxic.
  • Working with Ayurveda experts, the scientists found that the natural compounds in LG could break down amyloid proteins even better than the lab-made peptides.

What are the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease?

  • Early symptoms: Memory loss, especially of recent events.
  • Later symptoms: Difficulty with everyday tasks, trouble recognizing faces, personality changes (like depression and aggression).

What are "preserved skills"? Even as the disease gets worse, some people with Alzheimer's keep certain abilities, such as reading, telling stories, singing, or doing crafts. These skills are often managed by parts of the brain that are not as affected by the disease.

What is the future direction of this research? The promising results suggest that Ayurvedic medicines could be a valuable source of new treatments for brain diseases like Alzheimer's. This could greatly improve the lives of people affected by these conditions.

Key Terms:

  • Amyloid proteins: Harmful proteins that clump together in the brain in Alzheimer's disease.
  • Plaques: Clumps of amyloid proteins in the brain.
  • Peptides: Small molecules that can be used to target specific processes in the body.
  • Ayurveda: A traditional Indian system of medicine.
  • Neurodegenerative diseases: Diseases that cause the brain to deteriorate over time.

In simple terms: Scientists are exploring new ways to treat Alzheimer's disease by targeting the harmful proteins that cause brain damage. They have found that both lab-made molecules and a traditional Ayurvedic medicine show promise in preventing these proteins from clumping together. This research could lead to new and more effective treatments for this devastating disease.
